Forensic neuropsychology is the application of neuropsychological or neurocognitive procedures to any questions that bear on legal issues.

Forensic Neuropsychology

For example, neuropsychologists are often asked to examine patients who are disabled to confirm their disability status. Neuropsychologists may be asked to examine patients who have suffered an accident in order to document deficits in cognition that have resulted from a Traumatic Brain Injury, Toxic Exposure, or some other condition. Neuropsychologists are often asked by insurance carriers, civil litigation defense attorneys, or other entities to confirm the presence of an injury which has been alleged by a patient. Neuropsychological examination may also be important in determining Testamentary or Contractual Capacity, especially when aging or injured individuals change their wills or other important documents which might be contested at a later date. There are also applications of neuropsychology to criminal law, such as questions of diminished capacity or fitness to stand trial.
